Chapter Eighteen

In which the hero picks the right place and the right time.

“Hey,” Vika said, throwing her arms around my neck and whispering in my ear, “you know they’re going to write a bunch of crap, right?”

“Of course. That’s all you get in reports like that. Mammoth, that damn walrus, tried to get something like this going a couple years ago, after he heard of it somewhere. Maybe someone just told him about it. Anyway, he pulled us all together and told us that we’d be delivering him reports every Friday on what we’d done that week.”

“And what happened?” Vika smiled.

“Nothing.” I picked her up, took a couple of steps, and plopped into my chair. Vika squeaked quietly as she flipped around and landed on my lap. “I’m not sure about everyone else, but I just submitted the same report every week, just with a different date. Mammoth yelled and yelled, until finally he stopped.”

“So, what’s the point then?”

“If you’re asking about Mammoth, it’s because he didn’t have enough to do. If you’re asking about me, it’s because I needed to change the subject. Plus, I don’t want everyone to get too relaxed.”

Vika sighed.

“I’m a horrible manager, aren’t I?”

“Vika, sweetie, my answer depends on what you want to hear, the truth or flattery,” I replied frankly. “Really, I wouldn’t think about how you’ve been behaving recently if I were you. Sorry for putting it so childishly, but you need to get that crown off your head before it crushes the rest of your brains. If that happens, we’re screwed.”

She wiggled her nose. “You know…” She paused, trying to think of the right words to use. “If I could tell you everything, you’d realize how complicated it all is.”

“I’m done; the very first!” Shelestova burst into my office without knocking. “Ooh, you’re having your special moment here. I wasn’t trying to get in the way…”

“You need to knock,” Vika replied, slowly getting up and straightening her skirt. “I realize nobody ever taught you that, but you need to start learning how to behave in civilization.”

“I’ll buy myself a book,” Shelestova said with a nod. “I saw one for sale, it was called Etiquette. Vika, would you like me to get you a copy, as well?”

“Another phrase out of either of you, and you’ll both be out there with a bucket,” I said calmly to the pair. “Maybe that would teach you how to work together. And it may be sunny outside, but it’s cold, so your little hands will get red. You might even get those nasty dry spots on them…”

“Eww, you’re so gross!” Shelestova cried indignantly. “I don’t need that crap. Vika, I hear you, and I won’t make the same mistake twice. Go ahead, climb back up into the boss’s lap, and I’ll sneak right back out of here, and I won’t let anyone else in!”

“Oh, but I’m sure you’ll be doing plenty of snitching,” Vika smiled sarcastically.

“You took that set,” Shelestova said, clapping her hands, “but we’ll see who wins the match.
